Urban Ventures is a Minneapolis nonprofit that operates a Farm & Nutrition program focused on growing healthy food, teaching nutrition, and increasing community access to fresh produce. Its farm programming includes a 1.5-acre market garden in South Minneapolis, five additional acres of farmland in Lakeville, a weekly “pay as you’re able” farm stand, cooking and agriculture classes, school field trips, high school volunteering, youth internships, and community volunteer opportunities.
Heather Drake is publicly listed as Urban Ventures’ Farm & Nutrition Education Director. The proposed work-based experience would allow an educator to learn alongside Heather in farm and garden settings while studying how to establish a successful school garden containing edible perennials, native plants, and culinary herbs.
Planned learning includes seed starting, cold stratification, propagating existing perennial plants such as elderberries, planting and harvesting crops, preserving food and herbs, and applying sustainable growing methods. The educator’s goal is to bring these skills back to students and incorporate gardening, nutrition, environmental responsibility, and sustainable living into classroom instruction.
Public sources have previously connected Heather Drake with Moshky Farm & Gardens and described its production of seasonal organic vegetables, herbs, fruit, tea, and crops influenced by Southern African food traditions.
