Tri-State Tournaments organizes youth athletic tournaments by coordinating team registrations, schedules, facilities, officials, and event logistics. Successfully operating tournaments requires careful planning, budgeting, communication, marketing, customer service, and problem-solving to create positive experiences for athletes, coaches, and families.
During this educator externship, the participant will work directly with owner David Jewison to observe the day-to-day management of a small business. The experience includes learning how tournaments are planned and promoted, how finances are managed, how communication is maintained with participants, and how operational decisions are made before and during events.
The educator plans to translate these experiences into classroom projects that connect mathematics with authentic business scenarios. Students may design tournaments with scheduling constraints, manage concession operations, determine product pricing, calculate staffing costs, and develop solutions using algebra, financial literacy, communication, and organizational skills.
