Pipestone National Monument protects red pipestone quarries for their continued use by American Indian quarriers, a tradition dating back countless generations. The land is considered sacred by many American Indian Tribes and individuals because the pipestone is carved into pipes used for prayer. The monument is located adjacent to the city of Pipestone in southwestern Minnesota approximately 8 miles from the South Dakota border. With an altitude of 1,600 feet, the environment is high plains and solid farmland. The city of Pipestone is home to about 4,000 people and has public K-12 schools, a hospital, grocery stores, restaurants, a rec center, performing arts center, and nearby Minnesota and South Dakota State Parks. Housing in the area is affordably priced and some rental options are available. Sioux Falls, South Dakota is within a one-hour drive and would provide all the amenities found in larger cities.
