About the Opportunity-People’s Energy Cooperative, a member-owned electric distribution cooperative serving over 20,000 members across southeast Minnesota, is offering a one-week immersive internship experience for a student interested in energy, communications, engineering, and cooperative business operations.
This hands-on opportunity provides a behind-the-scenes look at how a rural electric cooperative operates — from the field to the boardroom.
What You’ll Do:
Ride along with a construction crew — Experience fieldwork firsthand and learn how electric infrastructure is built and maintained in a rural service territory.
Ride along with a staking engineer — Observe the planning and design process for new electric line construction and service extensions.
Support 90th anniversary celebration planning — Assist staff in preparing for community events honoring the Cooperative’s nine decades of service.
Develop a strategic communications plan — Work on a real-world project focused on promoting the Cooperative’s Youth Tour program to member families.
Tour the facility — Get an inside look at cooperative operations, equipment, and technology.
Learn the cooperative business model — Participate in a learning session on what makes cooperatives unique, from member governance to the Seven Cooperative Principles.
Who Should Apply
This internship is ideal for students interested in energy/utilities, communications, engineering, business, or community development. No prior experience is required — just curiosity, a willingness to learn, and an interest in how cooperatives power rural communities.
