SUMMARY:APPLICATION WINDOW: Summer Healthcare Experience (SHE) in Oncology
DESCRIPTION:SHE (Summer Healthcare Experience) in Oncology is a virtual\, multi-institutional\, synchronous program for high school students. Current freshmen\, sophomores\, and juniors interested in STEM are encouraged to apply. Program activities are designed to foster an interest in health-related careers\, recognizing the unique challenges of rural Minnesotans. Programming is delivered in part through a partnership with eCLOSE Institute. SHE in Oncology is funded by the American Cancer Society. \nPROGRAM DESCRIPTION:\nThe Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center is pleased to enroll up to 20 SHE in Oncology applicants each year. Over the course of two weeks\, students collaborate with peers from the Midwest on a genetics-based research project and a patient case study project to explore facets of cancer science and clinical care. Students also participate in faculty lectures\, panel discussions\, and skillbuilding workshops to acquire knowledge and network for their next steps on biomedical career pathways.

Whether you’re new to the field or looking to sharpen your foundation\, this program offers hands-on training and real-world insights from experienced professionals. \nThroughout the four weeks\, participants will rotate through focused training in general safety\, basic carpentry skills\, roofing\, and highway heavy construction. You’ll learn how to safely and effectively use tools and materials\, understand job site protocols\, and get exposure to the diverse work environments that carpenters encounter every day. \nThis program is ideal for individuals looking to explore multiple career paths within the construction trades while building the confidence and experience needed to take the next step. Training takes place in a supportive\, team-oriented environment and includes opportunities to connect with union representatives\, employers\, and training staff. \nNo prior experience is necessary\, and all safety gear and materials are provided. Take the first step toward a rewarding career with the skills and support to succeed. The program funds are made possible by a Labor Education Advancement Program grant from the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. \nProgram starts in June 2025!

DESCRIPTION:Range Youth Police Academy is a seven week course\, open to youth between eighth and 12th grade. This includes juveniles who are going into eighth grade as well as those who have graduated this year. \nThe academy is from 8 a.m. to noon\, starting Monday\, July 7\, and runs for seven consecutive Mondays. Cost is free. \n“This is a 7 week summer training for youths to give them an inside perspective of the legal system\,” Hibbing Police Investigator Rachael Shiek wrote in a news release. “Youths would be trained in courtroom procedures\, defensive tactics\, de-escalation techniques\, radio communications\, evidence collection and processing\, first aid / CPR (would receive a certificate from the state for this training) and much more.” \n“The youth police academy is an innovative program that provides young people on the Range with an opportunity to train with police officers during the summer\,” Shiek continued. “This helps to lead to positive relationships between the police department and the city’s youth. The youth police academy enhances responsible citizenship\, provides positive interaction with police officers and educates young people about challenges and responsibilities of police work. The academy includes structured activities designed to highlight cardinal work principles; teamwork\, leadership\, communication and problem solving/conflict resolution.” \nRegistration is required (see registration link).
